After scoring 86 points (38 goals, 48 assists) in 57 games in his first season in North America with Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (2016-17), he was named Canadian Hockey League Rookie of the Year and won both the Michael Bossy Trophy as the best professional prospect and the Michel Bergeron Trophy as Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Nico Hischier scored his first two NHL goals against the Ottawa Senators on October 19, 2017, and finished his rookie season with 52 points (20 goals, 32 assists) in 82 games. The following season, he had 47 points (17 goals, 30 assists) in 69 games.
