The crash that killed Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew was reportedly perpetrated by a drunk driver named Sean Higgins. The driver allegedly hit and killed the two brothers who were on bicycles. He, however, reportedly did not flee the crime scene and was later arrested.

Higgins' inmate ID provided by the New Jersey police is 11513. As per his police profile, he was born on Nov. 11, 1980.

Higgins stands at 5-foot-10 and weighs 225 pounds. He is bald and has brown eyes with a "fair complexion." His ethnicity was not specified in the report. He is married and is a citizen of the United States. No release date was specified in the incarceration section of the police report.

According to the New York Post, Higgins lives with his wife and daughters. His house is reportedly located just five minutes from the scene of the accident.

The Daily Mail reported that Higgins served in the 44th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Kosovo. The report added that Higgins had a speeding ticket dismissed in 2001, and a DWI in 2005.

The driver was reportedly driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he struck the Columbus Blue Jackets star and his brother, killing them both. Johnny and Matthew were reportedly riding their bikes just after sunset on Thursday evening in Salem County, New Jersey.

The incident reportedly occurred when Higgins tried to overtake two cars. Witnesses said that an SUV in front of Higgins moved to the middle of the two lanes to safely pass the biking brothers. Immediately after that, Higgins allegedly struck them in the right lane.

Sean Higgins was formally charged with two counts of death by auto. He was also charged with reckless driving, improper passing, and having an open container and consuming alcohol while driving.

The two brothers were cycling just a few miles from their family's home in Salem County. They were supposed to be in Philadelphia on Friday to serve as groomsmen at their sister's wedding. Johnny Gaudreau's wife was reportedly set to be the maid of honor.

The Blue Jackets' X account confirmed the deaths this morning, mourning the loss of their star player and his brother. Johnny Gaudreau was just 31 years old at the time of his death.
