Blake Fiddler leads Team USA at Hlinka Gretzky Cup and prepares for WHL season

Blake Fiddler, a 17-year-old defenseman and son of former NHL player Vernon Fiddler, is shining at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. The tournament features top draft prospects from eight international teams. Fiddler captains Team USA and is preparing for his second season with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL.

Born in Nashville and raised in Frisco, Texas, Fiddler is eligible for the 2025 NHL draft. He values representing the U.S. and hopes his Hlinka Gretzky Cup experience will help his WHL season. He had a solid rookie year with 15 points in 63 games.

"I grew up in the U.S., I was born in Nashville and it's a huge honor to be able to represent the U.S. at the international stage," Fiddler said (via NHL.com). "It's a big year, but you try to cancel out the outside noise. You try to be high on those (draft) rankings, but you just have to play your game and have tunnel vision on the goal ahead."

Oil Kings coach Luke Pierce has helped Fiddler in junior hockey. His leadership is clear, as his teammates chose him as captain. Coach Garrett Raboin praised Fiddler for his leadership, humility and composure.

"He's got a great presence, he's big, he's long, he can skate, you see his poise in moments," Raboin said. "He's unassuming but tough and I think no moment is too big. He's a calming presence and captain of our group. He's certainly raised right, he's incredibly humble and hard working. I really enjoy working with him."

Raboin also sees Fiddler as a strong draft prospect.
