William Nylander was born in Calgary on May 1, 1996. At the age of 14, Nylander lived in his father's homeland, honing his high-end offensive skills for teams like Sodertalje and Rogle before spending parts of the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons with Modo of the Swedish Hockey League. William made his Sodertalje debut on February 14, 2013, and got a chance to play alongside his father, a moment that few hockey fathers or sons can boast of.

The Toronto Maple Leafs selected Nylander as the eighth overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. The Maple Leafs chose to send Nylander to Toronto in the American Hockey League, where he finished fifth in scoring at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. Nylander had 14 goals and 32 points in 37 games during the second half of the 2013-14 season, giving Toronto fans a taste of what was to come when he joined the NHL club.
