J.T. Miller has been back with the Vancouver Canucks for a few weeks now since he took a personal hiatus. It hasn't exactly helped turn the season round, as they're still just 17-11-8 and in fifth place.
With the team firmly in the unenviable middle ground of being too good for a top pick and too bad to contend, they are reportedly considering a roster overhaul. That may include moving Miller.
On Thursday, NHL insider Nick Kypreos said that a roster overhaul could involve a Miller trade:
"It’s sounding like the Vancouver Canucks are leaning toward a major roster change as it becomes clearer to management that the current roster — specifically feuding stars J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson — cannot co-exist. Don’t be surprised if we start hearing the Canucks are willing to take calls on Miller."
Reportedly, there is a feud between Miller and fellow Canucks star Elias Pettersson, and the belief is that it may not go away. If the conflict doesn't end, the Canucks may have to move one of the pieces, and Miller seems to be the most likely candidate.
J.T. Miller trade rumors continue to mount
While J.T. Miller was away from the team, the Vancouver Canucks reportedly heard some calls about a trade for the center. They weren't interested, but the calls haven't stopped since.
NHL insider Darren Dreger said on Monday:
"What I know is, and this is based on intel and sourcing from around the league, is that there’s been a lot more chatter, certainly around J.T. Miller. I don’t think anyone would be surprised by that because his name always seems to find that rumor mill."
The analyst addressed the rift between Miller and Elias Pettersson:
"You don’t have to like your coworker, I can appreciate that, and maybe it’s much ado about very little, but I think that that did fuel this speculation, fuel the fire among clubs around the National Hockey League who admit that the chatter specific to Miller has increased."
Dreger also believes that Miller would be an easier and more beneficial trade to make for Vancouver. He'd bring in a better return and more teams would be willing to make the deal for him than for Pettersson.
