Comedian Nikki Glaser joked about the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid at the 2024 ESPYs while presenting the Best Male Athlete award.
Even though McDavid won Best NHL Player for the third year, Glaser teased the Oilers about their Stanley Cup Final loss to the Florida Panthers from a non-traditional hockey market. She said:
"What I'm trying to say is that nothing will stand in the way of these incredible athletes and their pursuit of greatness, except the Florida Panthers. Boy, Connor that must have hurt. To lose a game of ice hockey to a place that doesn't even have ice."
Glaser also joked about McDavid's Stanley Cup ambitions, hinting that he might only get to hold the Stanley Cup that his wife lets him take from the cabinet.
"For now, the only Stanley Cup that Connor will get to hold is the one his wife gets him to grab out of the cabinet."
B/R Open Ice shared the joke on X (formerly Twitter). NHL fans were quick to react to it.
"There’s a reason her last name is 'Glazer,'" one fan said.
"Women aren't funny," another fan commented.
"Nikki is hilarious - but her roast of Connor was kinda weak imo. Jokes hockey fans have heard before…," one X user said.
Take a look at some more reactions from NHL fans on X.
"Nikki Glazer is one of the most overrated comedians on the planet... The comment wasn't funny or applicable to arguably already top 10 player in hockey history...," one fan tweeted.
"... So a joke that is so generic that it can apply to every single NHL player who wasn't on the Panthers when they won. That's pretty low effort.," a fan commented.
"She’s not funny," another fan said.
