Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl is in the last year of his 8-year, $68,000,000 contract. This situation with Draisaitl's offensive potential and a projected cap-heavy contract has been a good recipe for rumors of his trade out of Edmonton.
However, on Friday, in a discussion with Jamie Hersch on NHL Network, analyst Stu Grimson denied the possibility of a trade from Draisaitl. He said he is a complement to Connor McDavid.
"I don't believe so (on Draisaitl trade possibility) ... while Connor McDavid is in peek from. To me whether they are playing on the same line. Whether one, two down the middle. Just depending on the moment in time for this group. Leon Draisaitl brings a whole lot more to the mix. Adds a robust complement to Connor McDavid. A guy that can carry the offensive load, in the moment when Connor McDavid's performance dips," Grimson said.
However, the Oilers' have reserved their decision for now and Draisaitl's future is uncertain. NHL fans reacted to Grimson's statement about Draisaitl on X.
"Draisaitl would look great in Canes colors," one fan tweeted.
"This is laughable," another fan tweeted.
"Why after he is being rumored to have agreed to an 8 year extension? If he has the extension to be signed, he is there long term," a fan tweeted.
"There is zero chance that we don't keep him together with McD! Drais will stay... he will win the cup... and that's that," one fan tweeted.
"NO.....they haven't and won't unless there is zero chance of something working out," a fan said.
"Everyone at NHL network lives under a rock. Spend more time listening than talking and maybe they’d learn something. Draisaitl is 100% resigning. How much more does it have to be talked about and reported. Whatever it takes to gets clicks and views no matter how stupid I guess," one fan tweeted.
Bob Stauffer also talked about Leon Draisaitl's contract
Bob Stauffer from the Edmonton Oilers radio network says Leon Draisaitl might want an eight-year contract. Stauffer talked with Draisaitl’s agent, Mike Liut, and thinks an eight-year deal is likely.
“It’s going to be a seven or eight-year deal ... for the success of the Edmonton Oilers, the two biggest things they need to do in the next two years is get extensions done with Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid," Stauffer said on Oilers Now radio (via Edmonton Journal)
New general manager Stan Bowman signed Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews to eight-year deals before. So, Stauffer believes both players will be signed.
