Columbus Blue Jackets alternate captain and defenseman Zach Werenski shared his thoughts on a fight on Friday between Mathieu Olivier and Calgary Flames' Martin Pospisil. It ensued after Olivier's hit on Joel Hanley, leading to Pospisil challenging Olivier.
The fight took place at 11:54 minutes in the second period, resulting in fighting penalties for Olivier and Pospisil. Brayden Pachal also received a roughing penalty against Olivier.
Werenski's caption on Instagram showed his admiration for Olivier's toughness.
“Jelly is the doggg @mattolivier24,” Werenski wrote on Saturday.
This was one of many physical moments in the game, which saw the Flames lose 5-2 to Columbus. Pospisil had two fights, the first with Jake Christiansen at 03:46 of the second period and against Ryan Lomberg later at 19:37. Both teams had similar penalty minutes, with the Flames receiving 19 and the Blue Jackets with 21.
Zach Werenski and the Columbus Blue Jackets won 5-2 over Calgary Flames
Adam Fantilli scored twice to help the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Calgary Flames. This win extended their point streak to five games (4-0-1). Kirill Marchenko had a goal and two assists and Zach Werenski added a goal and an assist. Dmitri Voronkov contributed two assists and Elvis Merzlikins made 27 saves.
Fantilli scored the first goal, which ended his 13-game goal drought. Kent Johnson added another and Werenski made it 3-0 in the second period. Blake Coleman replied with a rebound goal before Fantilli scored again to make it 4-1. Nazem Kadri answered for Calgary but Marchenko sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
The Flames struggled on the road and snapped their four-game winning streak. Calgary coach Ryan Huska was not happy with his team's effort.
“I thought we were a lazier group tonight and not overly pleased with our game,” Huska said after the game, via NHL.com. “We didn’t have a lot of guys at their best today.”
Rasmus Andersson said they need to be better in upcoming games.
“The first period was awful," Andersson said. "The second period was awful. The third was a push, just not good enough. We have to be better on the road.”
On the other hand, the Blue Jackets showed good team chemistry and are becoming more competitive. The Calgary Flames will next face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. MST. The Penguins have a 9-12-4 record and are 5-6-2 at home.
