Columbus Blue Jackets alternate captain Zach Werenski is leading the NHL in goals among defensemen this season. On Tuesday night, Werenski scored two goals against the Philadelphia Flyers in their 3-2 shootout victory.
Zach Werenski’s fiancee Odette Peters reacted to her beau’s first goal, reposting a clip of his snapshot in her Instagram stories. In the caption, she wrote:
“Gorg.”
Bobby Brink gave the Flyers an early lead with a tip-in goal in the first period until Werenski evened the score at 10:27 with a clean snap shot. It wasn’t until the third period that Philly regained the lead as Owen Tippett fired a wrist shot at 8:13, assisted by Morgan Frost.
However, Werenski struck again for Columbus, scoring at 15:23 with another sharp snap shot, this time assisted by Kirill Marchenko and Adam Fantilli. The goal saw him reach 50 points this season from 15 goals and 35 assists.
Odette Peters shared a clip of his second goal on the night on her stories and wrote:
“50!”
The game ended in a shootout victory for the Blue Jackets as Kirill Marchenko poked home the last puck of the night. Peters also posted a clip from the gallery of Nationwide Arena as the three stars of the night were being announced.
Zach Werenski finds himself in elite company with home point streak
With his two-goal performance on the night, Zach Werenski extended his home point streak to 17 games, placing him in a tie with Ray Bourque (January to April 1993) for seventh on the all-time list of longest home point streaks by an NHL defenseman.
The record is held by Bobby Orr, with an incredible 25-game streak from October 1974 to January 1975. The next feats on the list were recorded by Paul Coffey (23 games in 1985-86), Phil Housley (22 games in 1989-90), and Bobby Orr again with a 21-game streak in 1971-72.
Being the captain, Werenski made sure to appreciate the fans after their home victory. He mentioned that the team is enjoying the moment and trying to have ‘fun.'
“It's been great, yeah, we're having a lot of fun coming to the rink, just trying to keep it going. Playing in front of you guys has been awesome, so just trying to have some fun with it,” Werenski said.
Zach Werenski was also outstanding on the defensive end of the ice logging 2:22 icetime on the penalty kill, allowing no goals. The Blue Jackets alternate captain played a total of 25:33 on the night, four minutes more than any other teammate.
