NHL fans are discussing whether Claude Giroux, a forward for the Ottawa Senators, deserves a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The NHL shared Giroux's career stats: 350 goals, 1,066 points, and a spot on the 2017-18 NHL Second All-Star Team and then asked:
"Is Claude Giroux on his way to the @HockeyHallFame?"
Fans had mixed opinions. Some think Giroux's achievements are Hall of Fame-worthy, while others are skeptical.
"I don’t think. Great player tho." One fan said.
"He really fumbled that torch, didn't he? Zero Cups, no real individual awards or achievements. G was mid at best. I said what I said." Another fan argued.
"100% without question, G is a Hall of Famer. He’s given everything to this game and has graced the highlight reel throughout his very productive career. His play altered the game and the outcomes for over a decade and that’s Hall of Fame material. It’s not even a question." a third fan said.
The debate revolved around Claude Giroux's lack of playoff achievements and comparison with Sidney Crosby. Here are some more reactions:
"Yes. As has been said, he was seen as rivaling Crosby at one point. He is slightly undersized, but has shown he can deal with just about anyone on the physical side of things as well. The 2017 season cemented his offensive bones. He was +28 that season, pretty cool." a fan opined.
"No Stanley Cups, no individual awards, one ECF victory in 20 years. There are guys who DO have those that aren’t in the hall. Flyers HOF and Senators legend easily, but HHOF? Tough to say." one fan wrote.
"No… unfortunately dude doesn’t have any cups, no major NHL awards except one all star game MVP. He doesn’t have any international accolades. His Junior Career has a lot of stuff but I don’t think that’s enough when you look at all the other guys. Ring of fame in Philly? Yes." a fan said.
Claude Giroux's response to contract situation with Ottawa
On July 17th, Claude Giroux gave a response about his contract on the "Coming in Hot Podcast."
"I haven't really thought about it, to be honest with you," Giroux said. "My main focus right now is having a good year with the Sens and taking that next step."
Giroux is set to become UFA next summer. His future with the Senators will depend on his performance and personal choices.
