The NHL All-Star Skills competition began in 1990 at the NHL All-Star Game in Pittsburgh. The exhibition was an instant success, garnering massive support from fans to bring it back year after year.

The initial competition had four events: the puck control relay, the fastest skater competition, the hardest shot competition, and the most accurate shot competition.

The Breakaway challenge was added the year after in 1991. Since those five contests were introduced, four remain, with the puck control relay being phased out. With the NHL All-Star Game Skills Competition coming up this weekend, let’s take a look at the records for each of the three major competition categories.

Upper Deck NHL Fastest Skater

2022- Jordan Kyrou (13.55 Seconds)

The modern game is revolving more and more around speed. So it’s no surprise that the most recent Skills Competition has garnered the fastest skater in the competition’s history.

Speedy St. Louis Blues star Jordan Kyrou set the record of 13.55 seconds in 2022, beating Florida Panther Jonathan Drouin’s record of 13.105 from 2015. Jordan Kyrou will not return to the competition this Friday night, meaning that Cale Makar, who finished second in 2022, will have a shot at claiming the title.

GEICO NHL Hardest Shot

2012- Zdeno Chara (108.8 mph)

In one of the most memorable moments in the competition's history, Zdano Chara set an almost unheard of record of 108.8 mph while representing the Boston Bruins. Chara may hold the record for the hardest shot, but the most wins go to Shea Weber, who recorded the hardest shot in 2015, 2016. 2017, and 2020.

Last season, Victor Hedman won the competition with a 103.2 mph howitzer. He will also not return, so the only player who has won the competition before playing on Friday night will be Alex Ovechkin, who won it in 2018.

Honda NHL Accuracy Shooting

2011- Daniel Sedin (7.3 Seconds)

The most accurate shot competition, where players try to hit all four (or seven) targets in a fixed amount of time, has changed over the years. It has gone from who can hit the most targets to who can hit the most targets the fastest.

The undeniable champion is Daniel Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks, who hit four targets in a span of just over seven seconds. Sebastian Aho, the most recent champion in 2022, has the second fastest time in just over 10 seconds. He won’t be back this year, as there will be a brand new Most Accurate Shot Champion.
