NHL All-Star Skills Competition 2024

The NHL All-Star Skills Competition is the event before the night of the main NHL All-Star game. Through this event, the players showcase their talents to their fans and earn prizes for their efforts.

Formed in the NHL All-Star game in 1990, this event comprises various categories in which the players compete with each other. These categories included accuracy shooting, breakaway challenge, fastest skater, hardest shot, breakaway relay, elimination shootout and elite women’s 3x3 hockey. All these categories provide the players with a chance to show their skills to their fans and increase their popularity in the process.

Changes in the 2024 NHL All-Star Skills Competition

The NHL has changed the format for the NHL All-Star Skill Competition in 2024. For this year, there will be 12 players who will compete in multiple events. One overall winner will be determined after the event.

First, these 12 players will compete in 4 of the first 6 events. These events include Fastest Skater, Stick Handling, Hardest Shot, Accuracy Shooting, Passing Challenge and One timers. Based on the points scored, the top eight winners will advance to the seventh event, One-on-One The top six winners will proceed to the final event, Obstacle Course, from which the overall winner will be declared.

These are the 12 players for the skills challenge as chosen by fans voting.

Accuracy Shooting

Inaccuracy shooting, there are four targets connected to the four sides of a goal. The competing players have to hit these four targets in the fastest time possible. These are the players participating in the accuracy shooting in 2024.

Notably, Brock Nelson won this event in 2023 with 4/4 in 12.419 seconds.

Fastest Skater

This event consists of a designated course within the rink. The aim of the competitors is to race each other to reach the end line first. The competitor who completes one lap earliest is the fastest skater.

Hardest Shot

In this event, the competitors have to hit as hard as they can.

In this event, the competitors will have to slapshot a teammate’s pass without controlling the puck on their stick.

This is the seventh event. The players with the top eight points from the previous six events will advance to this event. In this event, there are 8 goaltenders. The 8 players can choose which goaltender they want to shoot against.

Obstacle Course

This is the final event of the skills competition in the 2024 NHL All-Stars game. Only the top six points earning players from the previous seven events can advance to this event. For this event, the points will be doubled. The last remaining competitor will be declared the overall winner of the 2024 NHL All-Star Skills Competition and will be rewarded with $1 million.
