NHL Awards 2024: Results, highlights & more

The NHL Awards 2024 ceremony capped an amazing season that featured historic individual accomplishments and singular team milestones. The expectation surrounded the major awards like the Hart, Norris and Vezina Trophies.

With the league’s biggest names nominated for the NHL Awards 2024, it’s worth taking a look at the results and highlights of Thursday night’s ceremony.

NHL Awards 2024 results and highlights

#5 Hughes wins the Norris Trophy

Quinn Hughes took home his first Norris Trophy and the first in Vancouver Canucks’ history.

While Hughes had been the presumptive favorite ever since the finalists were announced, the NHL Awards 2024 ceremony put an end to speculation about the award.

Former winners Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators and Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche rounded out the finalists. Overall, it wasn’t a surprise to see Hughes win. However, some observers might be surprised to see that Makar didn’t get more consideration this season.

#4 Bedard is rookie of the year

Chicago Blackhawks phenom Connor Bedard captured the Calder Trophy as the NHL Rookie of the year. He beat out Brock Faber of the Minnesota Wild and Luke Hughes of the New Jersey Devils for the award.

The Calder was a no-brainer this year, as Bedard had a spectacular rookie season. Hughes and Faber were deserving finalists but couldn't match the impact that Bedard had in 2023-2024.

#3 MacKinnon takes the Lindsay

Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon nailed the Ted Lindsay Award as the NHL’s most outstanding player as voted by fellow players. MacKinnon beat Tampa Bay leading scorer Nikita Kucherov and Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews.

For MacKinnon, the Lindsay award was his first win following two other nominations. The win also elevated expectations that MacKinnon could take the Hart Trophy in what was one of the closest races in recent memory.

#2 Hellebuyck is the best in goal

Winnipeg Jets netminder Connor Hellebuyck won his second Vezina Trophy in a landslide, taking 31 of 32 first-place votes. Runners-up Sergei Bobrovsky of the champion Florida Panthers and Thatcher Demko of the Canucks finished well off the pace.

While Hellebuyck’s win was not a surprise, the margin of victory was. Most analysts expected a closer race, but Hellebuyck ran away with the award, making it one of the biggest surprises of the NL Awards 2024 ceremony.

#1 MacKinnon wins the Hart

MacKinnon notched his second win of the NHL Awards 2024 by taking the Hart Trophy as the league’s best player. While MacKinnon’s win itself wasn’t a shock, it was surprising to see that Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and Kucherov didn't get more consideration.

McDavid and Kucherov had historic seasons by registering 100 assists each. Nevertheless, MacKinnon’s 51 goals and 140 points were good enough to earn 137 first-place votes out of 194 total ballots.

MacKinnon’s win underscored just how much the members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association felt that MacKinnon was the best in 2023-24.
