The National Hockey League is currently in the midst of a roster freeze for the holiday season, though it will come to a close when the action resumes on Dec. 27.

There have already been a handful of notable trades so far in the NHL this season, including the New York Rangers shipping former captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks along with former No. 2 overall draft pick Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken.

However, there are still a handful of players involved in trade rumors and could soon be on the move from their current respective clubs.

5 blockbuster trades fans would love to see

#1. New Jersey Devils acquire Mikael Granlund from San Jose Sharks

Grandlund is playing in the final year of his contract and is expected to be on the move no later than the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline in March.

The Devils, who would love another forward to be inserted into their middle six, could offer the rebuilding Sharks draft compensation in return for Granlund, who will become a free agent after the 2024-25 season ends.

#2. Anaheim Ducks trade John Gibson to any number of suitors

One of the most heavily talked about players on the trade market, Gibson has all but officially been replaced as the Ducks starter by young Lukas Dostal.

While Gibson was rumored to be a target of the Colorado Avalanche, that idea fell apart when they acquired MacKenzie Blackwood from the San Jose Sharks.

Still, several teams could use a boost in their goaltending department either due to needing an upgrade or because of injury woes. The Carolina Hurricanes are without Frederik Andersen (again), while they also lost Pyotr Kochetkov for a time with concussion concerns; Gibson could be an option to consider.

#3. Nashville Predators trading Gustav Nyquist to the Calgary Flames

The Flames are largely competitive again and aim to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2022.

However, one of their key offseason additions, forward Anthony Mantha, is done for the season after suffering a torn ACL. A former teammate of his with the Detroit Red Wings, Gustav Nyquist is in the final year of his contract with the struggling Predators and could slot in nicely onto either the second or third forward line of the Flames.

#4. Tampa Bay Lightning re-acquire Stanley Cup champion Yanni Gourde

A back-to-back Stanley Cup winner with the Lightning before being selected by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft, Tampa Bay would love additional depth in their bottom six.

Gourde is also in the final year of his current contract, which he actually signed with the Lightning prior to his time in Seattle.

#5. Vegas Golden Knights acquire Trent Frederic from Boston Bruins

Always looking for additional depth, the Golden Knights can almost always be counted upon for their usual salary cap shenanigans before long; a player that could be on their radar (along with several other clubs) is Bruins forward Trent Frederic.

With an affordable AAV of $2.3 million, Frederic could easily slot into the Golden Knights' bottom six and bring both energy and his trademark edge that he plays with.
