Toews, the Blackhawks captain for more than a decade, could be on the move. The Chicago Blackhawks, flailing in the standings in 2023, will have some of the most sought after trade pieces heading into the deadline. Patrick Kane will probably garner the most attention in the Chicago Blackhawks fire sale.
Next in line will be long-time center Jonathan Toews, who may garner interest despite his massive contract, as teams across the league look to improve depth up the middle.
For a team with the cap space to take him, the talented center could be a notable addition. He's still an effective forward and is invaluable in the faceoff circle. The Blackhawks may even have to shoulder a portion of his contract, depending on the return in a trade scenario.
Here are three teams that could be in the market to acquire the crafty veteran center, Jonathan Toews.
Boston Bruins
Jonathan Toews on the Boston Bruins might break one of the most fundamental and overlooked aspects of hockey: faceoffs. Although he's not what he used to be offensively, he leads the league in faceoff percentage. The second in that department is Bruins’ Patrice Bergeron. These two could create a notable difference in close games between the Bruins and their competition
Adding Toews to an already dynamic scoring group could elevate the team with the league’s best record. He could also allow a guy like Charlie Coyle to move to the wing, focusing on a more scoring/ puck possession role.
Winnipeg Jets
Due to the Winnipeg cap situation, the Jets will be one of the most active teams at this year’s NHL trade deadline. Due to having a lockdown blue line, the Jets will be buyers in the top six department. Number 19 would be a major addition for the Jets center core.
The Jets may have to overpay as they share the same conference with the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks captain could also add a leadership aspect to the Jets forward line that could be useful as well.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes’ time to buy is now, with one of the best records in the league. Despite this, the Hurricanes could use some center depth and Toews would fit the mold. The Blackhawks captain could slot in next to Jesper Fast and Jordan Martinook rather nicely on the Hurricanes third line.
The Hurricanes cap room could pose a problem, and the Blackhawks will either need to recover a solid percentage of his contract or deal a substantial contract. A trade with the Hurricanes may also need to facilitate a third team to take some of the contract status.
