A flurry of NHL trades took place as Day 2 of the NHL draft went into high gear. Among the trades, some notable names switched teams while giving contenders added flexibility moving forward.

Here’s a look at the full list of NHL trades, highlighting how these deals help shape the rosters of the clubs involved.

#1: Vegas adds goaltending depth

The Vegas Golden Knights acquired netminder Akira Schmid from the New Jersey Devils. The Knights also acquired forward Alexander Holtz in exchange for forward Paul Cotter and a 2025 third-round pick. This deal addresses a goaltending need for the Golden Knights following the Logan Thompson trade with the Washington Capitals.

Schmid had become expendable in New Jersey following the Devils’ acquisition of Jacob Markstrom from the Calgary Flames. This deal looks to be a win-win for both sides while giving Schmid a second chance at a full-time role.

#2: Bruins and Wild swap forwards and picks

The Boston Bruins landed forward Vinni Lettieri and a 2024 fourth-rounder from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forward Jakub Lauko and a 2024 fourth-rounder. This trade is a depth one, allowing both clubs to get bottom-six forwards that address different needs for both sides. The swap of fourth-rounders completes the trade, as the Bruins get a more experienced player in Lettieri.

#3: Logan Thompson lands with the Capitals

The Washington Capitals landed Logan Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights for the 83rd pick in 2024 and a 2025 third-rounder. The deal, as part of the day's NHL trades, made sense for Washington as they had a positional need following the departure of Darcy Kuemper in the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade. Thompson projects to tandem with Charlie Lindgren next season.

#4: Penguins get Hayes for futures

The Pittsburgh Penguins got veteran center Kevin Hayes and a 2025 second-rounder in exchange for future considerations. The Pens get a depth center who looks to play on the third or fourth line. The pick is a sweetener, as this deal seems more like a cap dump on the Blues’ part.

#5: Jeannot headed to Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Kings addressed forward depth by acquiring Tanner Jeannot from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Kings sent the 188th pick and a 2025 second-rounder to Tampa in the deal. For Tampa, this is a cap dump, as it seems the club is opening up space to sign a big free agent. Perhaps the move opens up flexibility to re-sign captain Steven Stamkos.

#6: Utah makes a move on defense

The Utah Hockey Club was busy adding strength on defense. The club got John Marino from the New Jersey Devils for the 49th pick and a 2025 second-round pick, which originally belonged to the Edmonton Oilers. This move offers depth for Utah as the new franchise looks to compete next season.

#7: Utah makes a splash

Utah made a big splash by landing top-pairing defenseman Mikhail Sergachev from the Lightning in the biggest of the day's NHL trades. Going the other way are blue-liner J.J. Moser, center Conor Geekie, the 199th pick in 2024 and a 2025 second-rounder. This move was clearly made to create cap room as the Lightning look to be big players in free agency.

#8: Sabres notch a second-rounder

The Buffalo Sabres acquired a second-round pick for forward Beck Malentsyn. The last of the NHL trades on the list gives the Sabres more picks in the draft as their forward depth allows them to part ways with a young player. For Washington, the move gives them more forward options, given the club’s depleted prospect pool.
