He began his professional journey in Switzerland in 2015, competing in the top-tier National League A and the second-tier National League B. Seeking to enhance his career, Hischier moved to Canada in the 2016-17 season, playing major junior hockey with the Halifax Mooseheads in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

Hischier, who won the Canadian Hockey League Rookie of the Year award in 2017, was the top prospect for the 2017 NHL entry draft. He was chosen first overall by the New Jersey Devils. He made his NHL debut on October 7, 2017, and finished his rookie season with 52 points, which helped the Devils return to the playoffs after a six-year absence.
