The Ottawa Senators, established in 1992, are an NHL team from Ottawa, Canada. The team were named after Ottawa’s role as Canada’s capital and a historic hockey team that won 11 Stanley Cups. After a rough start with last-place finishes, the Senators made their playoff debut in 1996–97, led by Daniel Alfredsson and Alexei Yashin. They earned their first playoff series win in 1998 and their first division title in 1999.

The Senators’ best season came in 2006–07, when Alfredsson, Dany Heatley, and Jason Spezza led the team to their first Stanley Cup finals, losing to the Anaheim Ducks. They reached the Eastern Conference finals again in 2016–17, inspired by Erik Karlsson, but were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in game seven.

Ottawa Senators Arena History/Ottawa Senators Arena Construction and Cost

The Canadian Tire Centre, originally known as the Palladium, began as part of a bid to secure an NHL franchise for Ottawa. The arena was developed by Terrace Corporation and was designed by Rossetti Architects. The construction of the Canadian Tire Centre began after Terrace Corporation proposed the project in 1989 to secure an NHL franchise for Ottawa. The plan included a hotel and a 20,500-seat arena on 100 acres of farmland in Kanata.

The project cost $188 million, with financing secured through a consortium of U.S. banks and Ogden Entertainment. The construction of a necessary highway interchange was delayed until the provincial government provided a loan guarantee. The arena was completed in January 1996 and opened with a concert by Bryan Adams. The first NHL game was played two days later.

In 2004, the seating capacity was expanded, and the arena became home to the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame. In 2017, the arena's capacity was temporarily reduced to 17,373 but later restored to 18,652 for hockey games. The Senators have explored replacing the arena with a new downtown location, with ongoing discussions for a new venue continuing after the passing of owner Eugene Melnyk.
