The New York Rangers won their first game in the post-Jacob Trouba era, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 at Madison Square Garden on Friday night. Artemi Panarin scored twice with Reilly Smith and Vincent Trocheck adding the others for the New York Rangers. Blake Lizotte and Philip Tomasino scored for the Pens.

So, here’s a look at the three key reasons why the New York Rangers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night.

3 reasons why New York Rangers defeated Pittsburgh Penguins

#3 The Rangers' penalty kill was perfect on the night

The Rangers’ penalty kill got the job done on Friday night. The Rangers went 4-for-4, killing off two crucial penalties early in the second.

Even though the Penguins opened the scoring shortly after, the Rangers managed to avoid disaster in the second. Then, the Rangers killed off another tough power play opportunity early in the third to keep the game tied.

The Rangers would take the lead about a minute after killing off their only third-period penalty. The effective penalty kill ultimately made a significant difference on Friday night.

#2 The Rangers outplayed the Penguins

The New York Rangers played a strong game from start to finish. The numbers back that up. The Blue Shirts outshot the Pens 32-22, winning nearly 63% of the draws. The Rangers also played a more physical game, getting the edge 19-14 in hits.

As for the eye test, the Penguins seemed slow at times. They had trouble getting past the neutral zone with speed and possession. The Rangers did well in moving the puck, gaining the zone and pinning down the Penguins in their own end.

Overall, the Rangers seemed energized and willing to work harder than in recent games. The boost bodes well as the Rangers look to get back into the Eastern Conference playoff race.

#1 Panarin, Trocheck came up big

One of the biggest criticisms of the New York Rangers has been the lack of offensive production. In particular, players like Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck haven’t stepped up as expected this season.

On Friday night, both players stepped up to the plate. Panarin and Trocheck each notched three points, with the Breadman getting two goals and a helper. Meanwhile, Trocheck scored one goal and added two assists.

Trocheck got a late goal in the third to give the Rangers the insurance they needed to land safely with two points. The Rangers are now firmly in possession of fourth place in the Metro Division and a wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers are off on Saturday. They hit the ice on Sunday night at home against the Seattle Kraken.
