The Boston Bruins pulled out a big 4-3 win in overtime against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. David Pastrnak lifted the Bruins past the Flames with 48 seconds to go in the extra frame, giving them their 17th win of the season.
Elias Lindholm, Morgan Geekie and Marc McLaughlin had the other tallies for the Boston Bruins. Matt Coronato, Nazem Kadri and Ryan Lomberg scored for the Flames.
So, here’s a look at the three key reasons why the Boston Bruins pulled off a big 4-3 OT win against the Flames.
3 reasons why Boston Bruins defeated the Calgary Flames in OT
#3 The Bruins stayed out of the penalty box
The Boston Bruins showed good discipline on Tuesday, avoiding penalties on the night. As such, the Flames did not have any power play opportunities.
Ultimately, avoiding the penalty box was crucial as it allowed the Bruins to come back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period.
It’s also worth noting the Flames took one minor penalty in the third. The power play chance came right after the Bruins had tied the game. While the B’s couldn’t take the lead at that point, they were able to win the game in overtime.
#2 Team resilience
The Boston Bruins showed significant resilience in coming from behind after a frustrating second period. Boston outshot the Flames 12-9 in the middle frame but headed into the dressing room down 3-1.
The B’s did not call it a night, though. They came out flying in the third, outshooting Calgary 15-5, and most importantly, tied the game in a span of about two minutes.
The Flames deserve credit for holding the onslaught back and rescuing a point from the overtime game. However, the Bruins outlasted the Flames, winning the extra point on Pastrnak’s late goal.
#1 Pastrnak’s overtime winner
Several times this season, the Bruins’ top scorers have shot blanks. But this time, the top scorers came around to score, with David Pastrnak getting the game-winner. Elias Lindholm also scored, notching two points in the process.
But it was Pastrnak’s beauty that sealed the win. The play started as D-man Charlie McAvoy dropped off a nice pass, with Pastrnak picking up the puck and ripping it past Dustin Wolf for the winner.
The goal was big as it gave the Bruins the win and put them past the Tampa Bay Lightning and into third place in the Atlantic Division.
The Bruins will face a strong test against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night in the finale of the club’s West Coast swing.
