Philadelphia Flyers' Tony DeAngelo set to have a hearing after spearing Corey Perry

It looks like Tony DeAngelo is under the NHL's radar for his actions on Tuesday night. In the NHL game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Philadelphia Flyers on that night, something unusual happened. Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Tony DeAngelo speared Corey Perry with a hockey stick.

Immediately after the incident, Corey Perry was seen collapsing on the rink. The impact of Tony DeAngelo's actions was obviously quite harsh as he jabbed Perry in the sensitive area with the hockey stick.

It happened during the third period when players from both teams entered into an altercation, and it grew fiery. Tony DeAngelo received a five-minute major and game misconduct for his behavior. Fans wildly reacted to it over the internet but later everyone thought the matter got settled.

However, things took a turn on Wednesday morning when the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced that DeAngelo would have a hearing for the incident. It looks to be an open-and-shut case given the quality of the video that is available and the context of the incident as it occurred in the closing seconds of a game in which the offender's team was trailing by a number of goals.

Despite having a questionable record, DeAngelo is not considered a repeat offender under the CBA. He was put on leave in 2017 because he assaulted an official physically. In 2021, he was also penalized for exaggeration. He was also punished twice during his major junior career for using language that was abusive, racist, or homophobic in violation of OHL rules.

Now he is again under the radar and might face severe punishment for bad sportsmanship. It's a tragic situation for the Flyers considering their already poor performances this NHL season.

Philadelphia Flyers' performance this season and the contribution of defenseman Tony DeAngelo

The Flyers have had a difficult season, and are currently on 59 points, which puts them in last place in the Eastern Conference Metropolitan. They have lost in eight of their previous 10 games and are fighting to keep their postseason hopes alive.

They must win every game from this point on if they want to have any hope of making the playoffs because they are 15 points behind fourth-place New York Rangers. This season, Tony DeAngelo has played in 59 games and averaged 22 minutes per game. He is tied for fourth position at his club in both goal contributions and points with 10 goals at a shooting percentage of 6.9 and 24 assists.

Despite DeAngelo's strong scoring play, the Flyers have given up 49 goals while he has been on the ice, so his defensive contributions have been poor. Moreover, the Flyers have given up 263 high-danger chances while he has been around. Now, it would be interesting to see what moves the team makes from this point on and what will happen to DeAngelo.
