The Pittsburgh Penguins, an American professional ice hockey team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have won the Stanley Cup five times (1991, 1992, 2009, 2016, and 2017). Founded during the 1967 NHL expansion, the team was named after the igloo-like appearance of Mellon Arena, where they played until 2010.

After drafting Mario Lemieux in 1984, the Penguins became a powerhouse in the late 1980s and won two consecutive Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. Despite financial struggles in the late 1990s, Lemieux became a part-owner and even returned as a player.

With the drafting of Sidney Crosby in 2005, the team enjoyed renewed success, winning the Stanley Cup in 2009, 2016, and 2017. Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have been key players in the team’s dominance, though recent seasons have seen early playoff exits.
