It’s been a quarter century for the Montreal Canadiens since the dawn of the new millennium. While the Habs have had some memorable runs, the team has also fallen on hard times.

Since 2000, some legendary names have emerged as the top players, showing a mix of players on the current roster with some having already retired.

Here’s a prediction of the Montreal Canadiens’ Quarter-Century Team ahead of the official panel and fan voting results announcement.

Predicting Montreal Canadiens’ Quarter-Century Team

First Team

  • Forwards: Tomas Plekanec, Max Pacioretty, Saku Koivu
  • Defense: P.K. Subban, Andrei Markov
  • Goalie: Carey Price

Tomas Plekanec has been the Montreal Canadiens points leader since 2000. He registered 606 points in 984 games played from 2003 to 2018. Pacioretty captained the Habs for three seasons before playing with the Vegas Golden Knights. Pacioretty scored 448 points in 626 games.

Saku Koivu was a fixture for the Habs. He captained the club from 1999 to 2009. Koivu racked up 439 points in 789 games for Montreal since 2000. He’s remembered as one of the team’s all-time greats.

On defense, Norris Trophy winner P.K. Subban and stalwart Andrei Markov make the First team. Markov racked up 572 points in 990 games for Montreal. Subban won the Norris in 2013. He was part of the famous trade for Shea Weber in 2016.

Carey Price needs no introduction. He was a former Vezina and Hart Trophy winner during the 2014-15 season when he won 44 games, posting a 1.96 GAA and .933 SV%. He’s the all-time leader in wins for the Habs with 361. The Habs made the second round of the playoffs, falling to the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Second Team

  • Forwards: Nick Suzuki, Brendan Gallagher, Alexei Kovalev
  • Defense: Shea Weber, Jeff Petry
  • Goalie: Jose Theodore

The Second Team features two current players and one blast from the past. Current captain Nick Suzuki has registered 322 points in 410 games for the Habs, scoring 119 goals. Brendan Gallagher is the longest-tenured player on the club, playing in 789 games, and racking up 443 points in that span. Alexei Kovalev registered 264 points in 314 games for the Canadiens.

On defense, former captain Shea Weber played in 275 games until he was forced into retirement following the 2020 bubble playoffs. Jeff Petry played in over 500 games for the Habs, registering 248 points.

Jose Theodore makes Montreal’s Second Team as he notched 132 wins in 318 games between the pipes. He was a sensation, winning the Vezina and the Hart Trophies during the 2001-02 season. Unfortunately, he was unable to replicate that success for the remainder of his career, making stops with several teams.
