The New York Rangers lost a gut-wrenching game to the Dallas Stars, 5-4 in overtime on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers blew a 3-0 lead, and then a 4-3 advantage, succumbing to the Stars in overtime.
Jamie Benn got the game-winner on the power play at 2:17 of the extra frame. Matt Duchene, Evegnii Dadonov, Jason Robertson and Thomas Harley got the goals for Dallas. Meanwhile, Vicent Trocheck and Alexis Lafreniere scored twice for New York.
Here's a closer look at three reasons why New York lost in overtime to Dallas on Tuesday.
3 reasons why New York Rangers lost 5-4 in overtime to Dallas Stars
#3. Atrocious penalty kill
The New York Rangers gave up two power play goals on two chances, giving the Stars a perfect night with the man advantage.
The power play goals were particularly tough for the Rangers as Dadonov’s first-period tally allowed the Stars to get back into the game. The goal brought Dallas to within one heading into the first intermission.
Then, Benn’s goal in overtime was a killer after Artemi Panarin got called for hooking 25 seconds into the overtime period.
The Rangers’ penalty kill uncharacteristically faltered, considering it’s ranked fourth in the league with an 83.9% rating. However, it didn’t get the job done against the Stars, being one of the main culprits for the Rangers’ loss.
#2. Massive collapse
The Rangers came flying out of the gate to start the game. The Blue Shirts build up a 3-0 lead 11 minutes into the first period.
But then, it seemed like they sat back and let the Stars take over. Dallas scored twice before the first was done. Then, Jason Robertson tied the game in the second.
While Trocheck’s goal at the 12:56 mark of the third gave the Rangers what appeared to be a victory, Dallas roared back to tie and win the game.
The Rangers’ apparent lack of focus is what led to the massive collapse.
#1. Quick's outing wasted
It’s hard to say that a goaltender had a strong outing when he gave up five goals. But that was the case on Tuesday night.
The Rangers let Jonathan Quick out to dry. It was evident the Rangers weren’t doing much defensively, especially with the lopsided 39-25 shot count in Dallas’ favor.
Specifically, Adam Fox did very little to get in Jamie Benn’s way during the overtime power play sequence. Benn shoved Fox out of the way, keeping Fox from staying in the play.
Fox, instead of trying to hold his ground, seemed gassed and unable to get back into the play. Benn tipped the puck past Quick, who didn’t have much of a chance to stop the puck.
The Rangers will try to regroup when they host the New Jersey Devils next on Thursday.
