For a long time, the New York Rangers have been considered a potential suitor for the services of Chicago Blackhawks legend Patrick Kane. The only stumbling block in this trade was Kane's $10.5 million salary cap hit.
However, the wait is finally over, as Patrick Kane could be officially announced to the New York Rangers on Wednesday after 5 p.m. ET.
"Good Morning: If NYR want to acquire Patrick Kane and have him in count against their cap on Wednesday (not today), they can acquire him after 5 pm (ET). Things continue to be put in motion behind the scenes (approval, equipment, logistics). We'll see when it happens."- Elliotte Friedman
According to Elliotte Friedman of 32 Thoughts, the Rangers are working on Kane's trade behind the scenes and the official announcement could come after 5 p.m. ET.
Due to Kane's high salary, the Rangers had a difficult time completing this trade. The Rangers have been very active in the trade market recently and have made a few roster changes, sending Braden Schneider to the Wolfpack and recently trading Vitaly Kravstov to the Vancouver Canucks.
The Rangers' trade deadline move freed up enough cap space to keep Patrick Kane at 75%. The Blackhawks, on the other hand, would have to retain 50% of Kane's salary, while the Rangers would have to involve a third team in order to retain 25% of Kane's salary.
The Blackhawks will try to maximize their returns with the Rangers for Patrick Kane
Since being drafted first overall in the 2007 NHL entry draft, Patrick Kane has been a pillar for the Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks trading their legendary player would certainly result in the best possible return from Rangers for Kane's services. The Blackhawks are expected to make multiple draft picks.
The New York Rangers have been playing their best hockey this season. With 77 points, they are currently placed third in the Metropolitan Division. By the trade deadline, the Rangers have already made some fantastic trades. The addition of Patrick Kane to their lineup will increase their chances of making a deep playoff run.
Patrick Kane has spent 16 years in the NHL playing for the Chicago Blackhawks. During that span, he won the coveted Stanley Cup three times.
