The New Jersey Devils have emerged as a potential trade destination for Vancouver Canucks forward J.T. Miller ahead of the 2025 NHL trade deadline on March 3rd.
Miller, who signed a 7-year, $56 million contract extension with the Canucks over the offseason, has been previously linked to the New York Rangers.
Rick Dhaliwal reported that New Jersey has interest in the veteran Canucks winger and also would likely include the Devils' top prospect Simon Nemec in the trade.
The 20-year-old Nemec was selected 2nd overall by the Devils in the 2022 draft and is currently playing in the AHL after appearing in nine NHL games this season.
Additionally, prospect analyst Cam Robinson also suggested that the Devils are seriously pursuing Miller via trade.
"There's some smoke out there that the Devils are really kicking the tires on JT Miller."Robinson said.
Miller has struggled lately in Vancouver, registering just 8 goals and 29 points through 38 games. His ice time was reduced to just 14:24 in the Canucks' last game the Kings.
J.T. Miller opens up about his recent struggles with Canucks
J.T. Miller has not registered a point in his last five outings amid reduced ice time from coach Rick Tocchet. In Thursday's loss to the Los Angeles Kings, Miller committed a costly turnover to Filip Hronek in the offensive zone that led to a goal against.
Speaking after the defeat, Miller opened up about his struggles.
“It's hard,” Miller said. “I'm trying to be mentally strong. And I think this is where your character shows, in moments like this. So today, my mindset was to work my ass off and see what happens. And I really still think I did that, but it's just costly mistakes right now. I just need to focus more."
Miller acknowledged his play has not met his usual high standards.
“It doesn't matter what I do,I'm on the wrong side right now, and it's on me. I'm a leader on the team, and the team expects me to be a lot better than this. So that's my focus," he added.
The Canucks and Miller will look to bounce back next game against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday at Rogers Arena.
