Insider claims Canucks optimistic about re-signing $30,000,000 defenseman

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman says the Vancouver Canucks are optimistic about re-signing defenseman Tyler Myers.

Myers signed a five-year, $30,000,000 contract with the Canucks in 2019. At 34, he still has a couple of years left playing, and Vancouver remains an option.

"There seems to be some real optimism that they're going to be able to work out something with Tyler Myers. I think he likes it there, and I think they want to keep him. That usually means there is a way to get it done," Friedman said on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast.

Myers will likely take less money than the $5 million he was making this past season, due to his age. But the defenseman still played a key role in the Canucks team that made it to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoff.

This past season, Myers recorded five goals and 24 assists for 29 points in 77 games. He had one assist in 12 playoff games for the Canucks.

Tyler Myers has expressed interest in re-signing with Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks were eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers in seven games in the second round. Tyler Myers expressed interest in re-signing with the team after that.

"Everyone should be pretty proud of buying in to where we were trying to take the group and burying our heads and working. It's pretty special to be in the position we are now looking back at where we've come from," Myers said.

Myers was picked eighth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2008 NHL draft. He made his NHL debut during the 2009-10 season and spent his first six years with the team before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets.

After five seasons with the Jets, he signed a five-year deal with the Canucks, which he just completed.
