NHL insider Dan Rosen has addressed rumors about Igor Shesterkin's future with the Rangers. In a recent Q&A on X (formerly Twitter), Rosen said a trade involving Shesterkin is unlikely. The talk started with a fan’s worry about the Rangers having trouble agreeing on a new contract with Shesterkin. They were concerned he might ask for too much money or a long deal.

Rosen firmly refuted these concerns, saying:

"There are no odds of this happening. It's not going to happen. Or, to soften that stance, it would be shocking if it happens."

He explained that Shesterkin is seen as the Rangers' most important player. The team will definitely work out a new contract with him before his current deal ends in the 2024-25 season. Shesterkin is considered one of the NHL’s top goalies and has played 213 regular-season games.

Rosen noted that both Shesterkin and the Rangers know his value and are likely to reach an agreement that matches his league standing.

The insider noted that Shesterkin is likely to become the highest-paid goalie in the NHL with his next contract and may wait to see Jeremy Swayman's new deal with the Bruins, aiming for a better contract due to his stronger track record.

Despite the speculation, Rosen assured there is no immediate rush. The Rangers have a year before Igor Shesterkin's current contract ends. They would prefer to finalize a deal before the season starts, but there is plenty of time to negotiate.

Igor Shesterkin seeks $12 million annually

Igor Shesterkin’s representatives are asking for $12 million per year for his new contract, about 13% of the Rangers' salary cap. GM Chris Drury might feel pressured to agree due to Shesterkin’s past playoff performances. However, recent struggles, especially against the Panthers, make the decision more complicated.

In the 2023-24 playoffs, Shesterkin appeared in 16 games. He won 10 and had a goals-against average of 2.34 and a save percentage of .927.

Fans often shift blame from Igor Shesterkin to other team issues. However, The Maven (Stan Fischler) doubts any goalie deserves such a high salary. He questions Shesterkin’s value given the team’s lack of success. The Maven advises GM Chris Drury to consider other goalies if Shesterkin’s demands stay high.
