NHL Rumors: Insider reveals Dallas Stars' Chris Tanev offer that fell short compared to Leafs

Chris Tanev left the Dallas Stars for the Toronto Maple Leafs during the offseason. He is one of the biggest acquisitions and will be a big part of Toronto's future. It required a bidding war to get him, and an NHL insider shared how much Toronto outbid Tanev's former team to land the defenseman.

Nick Kypreos, as reported by The Star, mentioned that GM Brad Treliving pursued his target and eventually signed him. Treliving offered a six-year, $27 million contract after attempting to negotiate a deal multiple times leading up to the trade deadline. Kypreos also pointed out that other teams interested in Tanev offered contracts with higher salaries but for shorter terms.

The Stars, according to Kypreos, could only offer a three-year, $15 million contract. That paled in comparison to other offers, specifically the one that the Maple Leafs ultimately signed him to.

The Toronto Maple Leafs not only outbid the Dallas Stars to land one of the NHL's best defensemen in Chris Tanev, but they also outbid the projections.

Tanev was expected to sign for roughly three years and around $15 million. The Maple Leafs essentially doubled both aspects of the contract. This is only one part of their off-season spending spree.

They also re-signed Max Domi to a four-year contract worth $3.75 million annually. They also signed Dakota Mermis, Philippe Myers and Cedric Pare.

They finished eight points shy of the eventual champion Florida Panthers in the regular season. Like all teams in any position like that, they were tasked with bridging and potentially overcoming that gap this offseason.

They've thrown a lot of money at doing so, and they may not be done just yet. They're still involved in trade rumors as well.
