Seth Jarvis is one of the Carolina Hurricanes' top players and had a breakout season last year. However, as an RFA he does not have a contract, and one insider is linking him to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
As an RFA, Carolina holds Jarvis's rights, but other teams can proffer him an offer sheet. If a team offers Jarvis a contract, he must first agree to it first, and then Carolina has seven days to match the deal. If they don't match it, based on the yearly salary offered, they would receive the following compensation:
- Under $1.51 million – no compensation.
- Between $1.51 million and $2.29 million – a third-round pick
- Between $2.29M and $4.58 million – a second-round pick
- Between $4.58 million and $6.87 million – a first and third-round pick.
Mark Easson of NHL Rumors believes the Pittsburgh Penguins are a prime candidate to provide Jarvis an offer sheet:
"Potential offer sheet targets for the Penguins. Seth Jarvis – Carolina Hurricanes – Could overpay for one year and then re-sign after next season. The Hurricanes have around $11 million in cap space so could match."
Last regular season, Jarvis recorded 33 goals and 34 assists for 67 points in 81 games. In the playoffs, he added five goals and four assists in 11 games.
Seth Jarvis addresses contract concerns
After the Carolina Hurricanes were eliminated in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Seth Jarvis said his goal is to remain with Carolina amid concerns regarding his contract situation.
“That’s something we’re going to have to figure out,” Jarvis said (via NHL.com). “It’s going to be up to what they want to do with me here and what they see fit. I’ve never been in this situation before, so it’s new.
“I’ll feel it out a little bit, talk to people in my circle. Hopefully (I’ll) be a Caniac next season, but we’ll see.”
Carolina currently has over $11.6 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia. The Hockey Writers projected Jarvis to sign a deal with $6 million annually, which likely is the range for the star forward.
