The St. Louis Blues are no longer in contention to make the playoffs this season. The team is presently undergoing a rebuilding phase. However, the rebuilding process will take a while to get the Blues back into contention. Nevertheless, they have a slight advantage over the other teams in the league.
The Blues presently have one of the best draft picks equity, which they can utilize to their advantage this trade deadline to accelerate their rebuilding process. Timo Meier and Jakob Chychrun are currently two of the hottest names on the market.
Recently, Elliotte Friedman of 32 Thoughts speculated on the Blues signing Timo Meier.
"They’ve got three first-round picks this year. They got theirs. They got the one from the (Vladimir) Tarasenko deal and now they got the one from the Toronto deal."
Friedman also stated that the Blues had the draft equity to complete the deal. Moreover, GM Doug Armstrong is not afraid to take big steps.
"Someone said to me (Saturday) night, if St. Louis wanted to make this quick, they could probably trade for (Timo) Meier. Now I don’t know if I see that happening Jeff, but I thought about it."
For the time being, it remains to be seen whether the Blues will come up with any plans regarding these two players before the trade deadline.
Timo Meier has been linked to the Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis, and Boston Bruins. Whereas Jakob Chychrun has been linked to the Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, and Blue Jackets.
St. Louis Blues' Trade Activities Thus Far
Thus far in this trade deadline, the Blues have been the sellers.
On February 9th, the Blues traded forward Vladimir Tarasenko and defenseman Niko Mikkola to the New York Rangers. In exchange, they received Sammy Blais and Hunter Skinner as part of the trade package.
The Toronto Maple Leafs successfully completed a blockbuster 3-team trade on February 18th, which involved the St. Louis Blues and the Minnesota Wild. The Blues were able to acquire draft selections from the Maple Leafs in exchange for a trade that sent star players O'Reilly and Noel Acciari to the Leafs.
All of the trades made by the Blues on this tradeline have loaded their wallets with multiple draft equities. This left supporters wondering whether the Blues could use this draft package to add a few major players to their roster.
