The New York Islanders are likely moving on from Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck. GM Lou Lamoriello said they are preparing to part ways with the two veterans, but things could still change.
“We’ll probably be moving on,” Lamoriello told NY Post. “That isn’t saying things can’t change. We’re talking about two veterans, two quality individuals. Two team leaders and two real good hockey players, so we’ll have to see how things come about. But we haven’t changed our thought process today any different than the last time we spoke.”
The Islanders have made several roster changes this offseason, bringing in new players like Anthony Duclair and Maxim Tsyplakov. Over the past 19 months, key players like Anthony Beauvillier and Josh Bailey have left the team.
Oliver Wahlstrom, who was expected to leave, signed a one-year deal and may still make the team. This will also be coach Patrick Roy's first full season leading the Islanders. The team is also considering contract extensions for Noah Dobson, Alexander Romanov, Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri.
Additionally, fans shouldn’t expect to see Duclair killing penalties. While the New York Islanders didn’t sign him to kill penalties, Roy will demand accountability from all his players in the defensive zone. As such, Duclair may have trouble adjusting to such demands.
Anthony Duclair wants to step up his play for the New York Islanders
Anthony Duclair is a skilled power forward for the New York Islanders. He focuses on scoring by crashing the net. However, his defensive play is weaker, and he struggles with getting back into plays after turnovers.
He’s not likely to be used for penalty killing, but he makes smart choices in his own zone, avoiding risky plays.
"Additionally fans should not expect to see Duclair killing penalties. While the Islanders didn’t sign him to kill penalties, Roy is demanding accountability from all his players in defensive zone. As such, Duclair may have trouble adjusting to such demands." Nestor Quixtan to eyesonisles.com.
At 28, Duclair offers both experience and potential. He could score 25 to 30 goals this season, especially with talented teammates.
Despite past inconsistencies, Duclair might prove to be one of the best signings of the offseason. The New York Islanders could benefit greatly from his skills, making the decision to sign him look wise for the Isles.
