Ryan Graves was born on May 21, 1995. He is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman currently playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL as of 2024. Selected by the New York Rangers in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Graves began his professional career with the Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.

After spending time in the AHL, he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 2018. Graves' career took off during his time with the Avalanche, where he became solid in defensive play and led the NHL in plus-minus with a +40 rating in the 2019-20 season. He was later traded to the New Jersey Devils in 2021. In 2023, Graves signed a six-year contract with the Penguins.

Growing up in a small coastal town, Graves spent his childhood playing hockey in the local rinks. He shared a close friendship with fellow Nova Scotian and future NHL star Nathan MacKinnon. They both frequently faced each other in youth hockey leagues before teaming up on regional teams.

Graves' dream came true when he made his NHL debut in the 2018-2019 season with the Colorado Avalanche. Graves’ parents and his girlfriend witnessed his first game in the NHL. His father Ron Graves shared with PressReader that he received so many messages and said:

“It’s great to see the people of Yarmouth supporting Ryan, he truly appreciates it” Us as parents we appreciate it all.”

Ryan’s mother boarded an immediate flight to watch her son’s first NHL game.
