O’Reilly is recognized as one of the NHL's premier two-way forwards, earning the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2019.

O’Reilly was selected 33rd overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2009 NHL entry level draft. He began his career with the Avalanche and stayed there for six seasons before he was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in 2015, where he spent three seasons and then joined the St. Louis Blues in 2018. O’Reilly won the Stanley Cup with the Blues in 2019 against the Boston Bruins and was also named for the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the most valuable player of the playoffs.
