The San Jose Sharks are a professional ice hockey team based in San Jose, California, who compete in Pacific Division of the Western Conference as part of the National Hockey League (NHL). Notably, since their formation in 1991, they have claimed six Division Championships (2001-02, 2003-04, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11), and a sole Conference Championship (2015-16), and a Presidents' Trophy (2008-09). Other than that, their off field operations are taken care by San Jose Sports & Entertainment Enterprises, with Hasso Plattner serving as governor (as of 2024). Moreover, their media coverage is provided by NBC Sports California and the Sharks Audio Network. Unfortunately though, they are yet to win a Stanley Cup despite coming close on a few occasions, most notably during the reign of Peter Deboer in the mid-2010s.

Remarkably, they hold the rights to draft the first overall pick heading into the 2024 NHL draft and will be looking to add a future star to their ranks and push their fight for the Stanley Cup in the near future.

San Jose Sharks Draft Picks Year by Year

The San Jose Sharks have had a diverse history with their draft selections from 1991 to 2023, focusing on a mix of forwards, defensemen, and goaltenders. In recent years, however, their first-round picks have shown promise, such as William Smith (2023) from the U.S. National Development Team and Quentin Musty (2023) from the Sudbury Wolves. Other notable selections include William Eklund (2021), who has appeared in 97 NHL games with 52 points, and Tomas Hertl (2012), a significant contributor with 488 points in 718 games. The team has also made strategic second-round picks like Mario Ferraro (2017), a defenseman with 74 points in 330 games, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic (2005), a long-term cornerstone with 376 points in 1296 games.

Throughout their draft history, the Sharks have balanced their picks across various leagues and regions, targeting players from North American junior leagues, European leagues, and U.S. high schools. Some of notable names include the franchise's first-ever top-five pick was Pat Falloon, defenseman Mike Rathje, Patrick Marleau, and Brad Stuart.

The following table looks at San Jose Sharks' draft picks over the years:
