The New York Rangers edged the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1 at the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night. The Rangers won their second straight, improving their record to 20-20-2 on the season.
Adan Edstrom broke a 1-1 tie at 5:57 of the third period to lift New York past Vegas. Vincent Trocheck added a power play goal to tie the game late in the second period. Meanwhile, Mark Stone opened the scoring for the Golden Knights with a power play of his own.
So, here is a closer look at the three key reasons why the New York Rangers won over the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday.
3 reasons why New York Rangers won over Vegas Golden Knights
#3 Perfect power play
The New York Rangers got one chance with the man advantage. But they made the most of it. Vincent Trochek’s 14th of the season tied the game about four minutes after Stone opened the scoring.
The Rangers have the 21st-ranked power play in the league at 19.8%, placing them in the middle of the pack. With the amount of high-end scoring talent on their roster, their current power play rating seems underwhelming.
That is why getting a perfect night with the man advantage is crucial to getting the Blue Shirts to turn things around in the second half of the season.
#2 Depth scoring came through
While the New York Rangers power play scored a huge goal, it was the depth scoring that lifted the team on Saturday night.
The fourth line got a huge goal with Adam Edstrom notching his third of the season. Jonny Brodzinski and Matt Rempe got the assists on the goal.
For the Blue Shirts, getting a fourth-line game-winning goal was a huge boost, particularly considering the scoring challenges the team has faced over the last month or so.
#1 Shesterkin’s resurgent performance
Igor Shesterkin did what he usually does: keep the Rangers in the game long enough for the team to find a way to win.
On Saturday night, Shesterkin made 29 saves to secure the win for New York. In particular, Shesterkin was money in the bank in the third period as the Golden Knights outshot the Rangers 12-2 in the final frame.
Shesterkin held the fort as the barrage of shots from Vegas attempted to tie the game. However, Shesterkin stopped all 12, preserving the win.
The New York Rangers will get a couple of days to recover as they continue their road trip, visiting the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night.
