Spencer Carbery family

Spencer Carbery is a Canadian ice hockey coach and former professional player. Born on November 9, 1981, Carbery played as a left-wing in his successful career in leagues like the ECHL and CHL before transitioning to coaching. He began his coaching journey in 2010 as an assistant with the South Carolina Stingrays, later becoming the youngest head coach in the ECHL. Carbery has since risen through the ranks, earning awards such as the AHL Coach of the Year. In 2023, he was named head coach of the NHL’s Washington Capitals.

Spencer began as a multi-sport athlete, playing minor hockey with the Racquet Club before progressing to the Peninsula Panthers and eventually the BCHL’s Cowichan Valley Capitals. His father recalls Spencer’s resilience in the face of setbacks, noting how he overcame repeated doubts about his potential to make it in college or professional hockey.

“He ran into so many brick walls,” Brian Carbery told the Check news. “Where ‘No, you’re not gonna make the team. You’ll never play pro hockey. You’ll never play college hockey,’ and it never fazed him.”

Despite his drive and talent, his path was far from smooth. A pivotal moment came in 2008, during his professional career in the ECHL with the Fresno Falcons. Five days before Christmas, the team unexpectedly folded, leaving Carbery and his teammates in shock.

"We were in the locker room preparing for a game when we learned the news," Carbery recalled in an interview with The Washington Post.

Brian’s belief in his son’s dreams served as a foundation for Spencer. His support extended beyond encouragement, as he allowed Spencer to find his path, even during the early years when Spencer worked hard for minimal financial reward.

Spencer Carbery is married to Casey Carbery. The two met at St. Norbert College, where Spencer was a standout hockey player. Casey recalls their first meeting fondly, describing an instant connection:

“It’s crazy and I know it’s cliché, but right from that moment I had this pit feeling in my stomach, like those nervous butterflies that this person was going to be special in my life,” she shared in an interview with St. Norbert College.

Casey once worked in banking but chose to leave her career to focus on supporting Spencer and their family during his demanding coaching schedule.

Spencer Carbery and his wife Casey Carbery are proud parents to two children, Hudson and Vivienne. Both have grown up engaged in the dynamic lifestyle of a professional hockey family.
