The St. Louis Blues have been eliminated from playoff contention. After the Blues traded off nearly their entire team at the NHL trade deadline, it became apparent that they would head towards a long rebuild.
Here are a few things they should do in the off-season.
What should St. Louis Blues do in the offseason?
#1 Draft, Draft Draft
The St. Louis Blues sold off everyone at this year’s deadline and got rewarded for their efforts. The Blues got a ton of draft picks in trading away players like Ivan Barbashev and Ryan O’Reilly.
This year’s draft class is poised to be one of the deepest ever. So if the Blues make the right selections, they will have a young core they can add to the already talented Torey Krug and Jordan Kyrou.
Right now, the St. Louis Blues are primed to have three draft picks in the first round. The opportunity to build for the future is a juicy one in St. Louis.
#2 Is Craig Berube the right man to take team forward?
Berube has been one of the most successful coaches in franchise history, bringing the organization a Stanley Cup in 2019. This rebuild is not going to be one for the faint-hearted. The St. Louis Blues management will have to decide whether Berube is the right man moving forward for the organization.
Berube is certainly a talented coach, but the team for the next few seasons in St. Louis will not be good as they build a talented prospect pool. By the time Berube develops another championship-level team, his good graces may have soured. If the Blues want to keep Berube around, a promotion into the front office would make sense.
#3 Trade Jordan Binnington
As the St. Louis Blues look towards the future, they may need to make some difficult decisions to rebuild their roster.
One potential move could be trading goaltender Jordan Binnington this summer. Binnington has been a key player for the Blues in recent years, helping the team win the Stanley Cup in 2019. However, he struggled during the 2020-2021 season and has been inconsistent since then.
Trading Binnington could help the Blues acquire valuable assets, like draft picks and young prospects, to aid in their rebuilding process. It would also free up cap space for the team to make other moves and sign key players to long-term contracts.
While it would be difficult to part ways with a player who has been so instrumental to the team's success, trading Binnington could be the best move for the Blues as they look to rebuild for the future.
