Stuart Skinner, born November 1, 1998, is a goaltender for the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL. Drafted by the Oilers in 2017 (78th overall), Skinner began his career playing junior hockey with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Swift Current Broncos in the WHL. Skinner scored a rare goalie goal in 2016 with the Hurricanes, becoming a standout in WHL history. Making his NHL debut in 2021, Skinner quickly became a starting goalie in 2023, securing his first NHL shutout and earning a spot in the All-Star Game. He was also a finalist for the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year.
Stuart Skinner Parents
Stuart Skinner was born to Sam and Sue Skinner, who have been supportive of his hockey career, even with the challenges of raising nine kids. The Skinners spent a lot of time at the rink, juggling busy schedules and ensuring everyone had what they needed. With a big family, they joked that if they’d had another child, they would have named them “Stop” because of how hectic life was, as per CBC.
Sam Skinner initially didn’t want Stuart to become a goalie. He was a high-scoring forward on his novice team, and his dad hoped he’d stay in that position. But Stuart Skinner’s love for goaltending was clear, and Sam realized he wasn’t going to change his son’s mind. He once tried to scare Stuart off by asking his older brothers to fire pucks at him, but instead of getting nervous, Skinner loved it.
“I knew I was in trouble,” Sam Skinner said to CBC.
When Stuart attended Gary Roberts’ tough summer training camp, his dedication showed. Each morning at 5:30, he’d eagerly ask his dad, “Can we go?” Skinner’s hard work and his family’s support have been key to his journey in hockey.
Stuart Skinner Siblings
Stuart Skinner has eight siblings, with each of their first names starting with the letter 'S' (Samantha, Shannon, Sharon, Sandra, Sarah, Sheldon, Scott, Stephen). He is the youngest of the nine kids. A family deeply rooted in both hockey and figure skating, his parents Sam and Sue Skinner along with his five older sisters and three older brothers were either hockey players or figure skaters. As Stuart’s father Sam describes via Hockey Canada.
“It just seemed we were always on the ice. Even when it wasn’t a formal figure skating or hockey practice and it was winter, we were on a pond or outdoor rink somewhere."
When Stuart first joined hockey, he used hand-me-down equipment from his older brothers Stephen, Scott, and Sheldon, who all played hockey. Although he started as a forward, Stuart quickly fell in love with being a goalie, despite his dad’s initial doubts. “Every puck that hit him, he was going, ‘yes, yes,’” says Sam Skinner told Hockey Canda. “I could see even at that age it was a passion.”
As the youngest of nine, Stuart always had encouragement and competition around him. His dad Sam Skinner believes that having a large family helped Stuart become focused and driven.
