The Montreal Canadiens edged the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Sunday night at the Wells Fargo Center. With that, the Habs extended their winning streak to two games, while the Flyers continued their disappointing start, falling to 2-6-1.

Captain Nick Suzuki, Brendan Gallagher, Cole Caufield and Jake Evan scored for the Montreal Canadiens. Meanwhile, Travis Sanheim netted twice, and Travis Konecny got the other goal for the Flyers. Konecny added to his point total on Sunday night following a five-point outburst in his previous game.

So, let’s take a look at the three reasons why the Montreal Canadiens beat the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night.

Three reasons why Montreal Canadiens beat Philadelphia Flyers

#3 Cayden Primeau plays well enough to win

Cayden Primeau got the nod for the Canadiens on Sunday night. He was coming off strong outings against the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders. He made over 30 saves in both games, particularly coming in relief of Sam Montembeault against the Rangers.

On Sunday night, Primeau didn’t have his best performance of the year but played well enough to help his team win. He held the fort for the Habs, especially when the Flyers made the game close at 4-3. But he stood tall and gave the Canadiens a chance to win the game.

#2 The Habs hold on to win

The Montreal Canadiens took a 4-1 lead into the third period. It seemed like the game was well in hand despite the Flyers’ pressure throughout the third. But Sanheim scored at 17:48 to make it 4-2. Less than a minute later, Konecny scored to cut the lead to one.

While the Flyers kept the pressure on, the Canadiens held on for the win. With the late defensive effort, the Montreal Canadiens avoided disaster, as they nearly blew a three-goal lead. So, the Habs deserve credit for hanging on instead of folding after two quick goals had nearly derailed a great game.

#1 Suzuki and Gallagher step up

The Canadiens' top forwards stepped up on Sunday night. Both Suzuki and Gallagher had a goal and an assist to lift the Canadiens past the Flyers.

The offensive production from Suzuki and Gallagher complemented Cole Caufield’s eighth goal of the season, a power play midway through the second period.

The combination of young and veteran production is important, as the Habs are in transition. Their plays this season suggest the rebuild may be ahead of schedule. As such, the Canadiens will be counting on its top players to lead the way out of the Atlantic Division cellar.

The Habs play their third game in four nights when they take on the Seattle Kraken in their next matchup on Tuesday night.
