The Montreal Canadiens continued their hot streak, getting a huge 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canucks in overtime on Monday night at Bell Centre. Captain Nick Suzuki got the overtime winner 48 seconds into the extra frame, scoring on the power play.

Cole Caufield, Kaiden Guhle, Kirby Dach (PPG) and Lane Hutson got the other tallies for the Montreal Canadiens. Meanwhile, J.T. Miller scored twice for Vancouver, with Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Jake DeBrusk (PPG) getting the other goals.

Here's a closer look at three reasons why Montreal defeated Vancouver in overtime.

3 reasons why Montreal Canadiens won 5-4 over Vancouver Canucks in OT

#3. Power play clicked

The Montreal Canadiens went 2-of-4 on the power play, including Suzuki’s game-winner in overtime. The performance with the man advantage was crucial, especially considering that power play specialist Patrik Laine was not in the lineup.

While the Habs surrendered a power play goal, it ultimately didn’t matter as the Habs were able to take advantage of a crucial opportunity in overtime.

The two goals were huge as the Canadiens’ power play has been in a bit of a slump of late. Hopefully, Monday night’s performance will spark a turnaround for the Habs’ power play.

#2. Lane Hutson led the way on the blue line

Lane Hutson has emerged as a bona fide top-pairing defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens. Hutson led the blue line core with 25:19 of ice time while notching a goal and two assists.

Hutson played 23 shifts, finishing the game a plus-1, with three shots on goal. Moving forward, the Habs will be looking to rely more on Hutson as the young rearguard continues to hone his skills at the NHL level.

It's worth pointing out that Hutson is emerging at the right time, as rumors suggest the team could be trading Mike Matheson. So, Hutson could step into Matheson's role, providing the Habs with a high-end defenseman for years to come.

#1. Suzuki’s game-winner

Nick Suzuki had a strong game, finishing with three points on the night (1G, 2A). Most importantly, Suzuki rose to the occasion, scoring the game-winner in overtime.

The three-point effort on Monday night extended Suzuki’s point streak to four games, giving him six points over the span.

The Canadiens captain seems to be heating up, registering 41 points in 40 games this season. Suzuki should continue to play a key role in the Habs' turnaround as they look to sneak into the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

The Canadiens will get a couple of days to regroup before playing three games in four nights this upcoming weekend, starting with a tilt against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Friday night.
