The Boston Bruins shut out the Seattle Kraken 2-0 on Sunday night. The win marked back-to-back shutouts for the Bruins, after blanking the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 on Saturday night.
Justin Brazeau and Charlie Coyle scored in the first, proving all the scoring the Bruins needed to seal the victory.
So, let’s take a closer look at the three reasons why the Boston Bruins defeated the Seattle Kraken on Sunday night.
3 reasons why Boston Bruins shut out Seattle Kraken on Sunday night.
#3. The Bruins played another tight, hard-checking defensive game
The Boston Bruins played a tough, physical game on Sunday night. The B’s outplayed the Kraken in virtually every category, giving very little room for the Kraken to get any momentum going.
The Bruins killed off all three Kraken power plays, while outhitting Seattle 18-15. Also, the B’s won over 63% of the draws, outshooting the Kraken 33-23.
The solid all-around effort punctuated by Jeremy Swayman’s performance gave the Bruins their second win in as many nights.
#2. The Bruins connected on the power play
Boston Bruins center Charlie Coyle scored his second of the season, a power play marker at 9:57 of the first period.
While the Bruins’ power play went 1-for-5 on the evening, Coyle’s goal provided Bruins with a two-goal cushion. Nevertheless, the lack of overall success on the power play does seem somewhat concerning.
Currently, the Bruins’ power play ranks 24th in the league at 14.3%. While that percentage is not awful, it isn’t very encouraging, either. The Bruins will need to improve on their production with the man advantage in order to extend their winning streak.
#1. Jeremy Swayman was brilliant
Like Joonas Korpisalo the night before, Bruins netminder Jeremy Swayman skated away with a clean sheet, stifling the Kraken’s attack all night long.
In total, Swayman made 23 saves, giving nothing away. The Kraken went 0-for-3 on the power play, while failing to generate significant scoring opportunities 5-on-5.
It’s worth pointing out that Swayman wasn’t overly tested on Sunday night. But when he had to, Swayman made solid saves, giving his team the confidence to play with a rather slim margin. That confidence is crucial as the Bruins have struggled the generate momentum so far this season.
The Bruins will be looking for a third-straight shutout as the take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Scotiabank Arena next Tuesday night.
