The Boston Bruins were on the wrong end of an 8-1 blowout Tuesday night at Canada Life Centre. The Winnipeg Jets led from start to finish, lighting up Jeremy Swayman for eight goals on 35 shots.

Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor each ended the night with three points. Neal Pionk, Gabriel Vilardi and Nikita Chibrikov had two points apiece for the Jets. Meanwhile, David Pastrnak broke the shutout for the Bruins.

Let’s take a look at the three reasons why the Boston Bruins were blown out by the Winnipeg Jets.

3 reasons why Boston Bruins were blown out by Winnipeg Jets

#1. Dismal Boston Bruins penalty kill

The Bruins penalty kill struggled, giving up three goals on six chances. The physical affair got out of control, with the Bruins racking up 37 penalty minutes. Mark Kastelic, Trent Frederic and Nikita Zadorov each received fighting majors in a wild third period.

However, the game was out of reach by then. The Jets had a 6-1 lead, fueled by three power-play goals. The Bruins’ frustration boiled over, leading to two more Jets goals. All told, the Jets ran up the score, totaling eight goals against a beleaguered Bruins defense.

#2. Third-period meltdown

The game was relatively close after 40 minutes. The Jets entered the third period with a 3-1 lead before things fell apart for Boston.

The Jets scored a minute into the third period, then pushed ahead to 5-1 at the 5:33 mark before adding another power-play tally at 7:19.

After a melee following Alex Iafallo’s power-play goal to make it 6-1, the Bruins couldn’t get much of anything going, surrendering two more goals in a lopsided shellacking.

#3. Jeremy Swayman pounded

When everything was said and done, Bruins starting netminder Jeremy Swayman gave up eight goals on the night.

Perhaps the worst goal came from Nikita Chibrikov, who scored his first of the season after Bruins defenseman Andrew Peeke made a weak clearing attempt. As Peeke tried to clear the puck, he hit a Jets forechecker, leaving the puck on the doorstep for Chibrikov to wire past Swayman.

On the replay, Swayman barely moved, visibly frustrated by the failed clearing attempt. That goal was the final insult to a regrettable night for the Bruins.

The Bruins will get a day off Wednesday before facing the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena Thursday night.
