Elliott Friedman, a renowned NHL commentator and writer, has expressed his frustration with the Winnipeg Jets' inability to clinch a playoff berth.
Speaking on his podcast, Friedman highlighted the stress on General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff’s face during their game against the Nashville Predators, despite it being a good game.
"He stated, "Talking about Winnipeg, if you watched that game against Nashville on Saturday afternoon, it was a really good game but you could see the stress on Cheveldayoff’s face as he was watching that game."
Friedman pointed out that the Jets have been inconsistent throughout the season, unable to maintain their lead in the standings. He cited their recent game against Nashville as an example, where the Jets allowed the Predators to come back and potentially tie them in the standings. He said:
"The wild thing about the Jets is that they can't stand prosperity. Every time they open up a lead, they allow the teams to come back. Like that game on Saturday, if Nashville wins that game and Calgary wins that night, they are all right next to each other and Nashville has big games in hand."
The Jets' inability to pull away from their competition has left Friedman exasperated. He compared their season to a Taurus race, where the teams are all bunched together and no one can seem to grab the lead.
“It’s amazing to me how the Jets pull away and then everyone gets close again and none of those teams can tie them,” said Friedman. “It’s good because it makes it interesting but somebody grab it already.”
Friedman’s frustration with the team is understandable, given their potential and the talent on their roster. However, it remains to be seen if they can turn it around and secure their spot in the playoffs. The pressure is now on the Jets to prove their doubters wrong and make a strong push towards the postseason.
Struggling Winnipeg Jets face uphill battle for playoff berth
The Winnipeg Jets have had a rollercoaster season, as evidenced by their current standing in the Central Division. With only a few games left to play, they find themselves in fourth place with 81 points, just three points behind the Colorado Avalanche.
The Jets' struggles have been reflected in their divisional standings. They are currently in fourth place, with the Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, and Colorado Avalanche all ahead of them. The Jets have played 71 games so far this season, with 39 wins and 28 losses. Their goal differential is +13, with 215 goals for and 202 goals against.
With only a few games left in the regular season, the team will need to turn things around quickly if they want to make a push for the playoffs. They have the talent to compete with the best teams in the league, but will need to find consistency and avoid the mistakes that have plagued them all season.
The Winnipeg Jets' struggles are a reminder of how difficult it is to compete in the highly competitive NHL Central Division. With several talented teams vying for playoff spots, every game is crucial, and even small mistakes can have significant consequences.
The Jets have a tough road ahead of them, but they have the potential to turn things around and make a strong push towards the postseason.
