Ross Robertson Cup playoffs, recording seven goals and six assists in 13 games.

Wilson made his mark in the NHL when, after the Whalers' 2012–13 season, he joined the Washington Capitals for the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs, playing two games against the New York Rangers. While initially serving as an enforcer on the fourth line during the 2013–14 NHL season, Wilson faced challenges, including a broken fibula that sidelined him temporarily.

His aggressive playing style, characterized by high penalty minutes, drew criticism, and he encountered multiple fines and suspensions for controversial hits, notably during the 2018 Stanley Cup championship playoffs.

After a 20-game suspension, later reduced to 14, Wilson adapted his approach, focusing on goal generation rather than physicality.
