Top 3 Barclay Goodrow landing spots after New York Rangers place veteran on waivers feat. San Jose Sharks

According to the New York Post's Mollie Walker, forward Barclay Goodrow has been placed on waivers by the New York Rangers. As per Walker, the plan is to buy out Goodrow’s contract as soon as league rules permit it. However, there is a possibility that another team might claim Goodrow, relieving the Rangers of his $3.6 million cap hit for next season.

The decision was reportedly not based on a poor performance from the two-time Stanley Cup champion, but solely based on cap considerations. With that in mind, Goodrow is now eligible to be claimed by any of the other franchises in the league.

Here's a look at three potential landing spots for Barclay Goodrow.

3 landing spots for Barclay Goodrow after being placed on waivers

#1. Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks have long been looking for veteran talent to support their young core, including budding superstar Connor Bedard. Goodrow would provide great veteran leadership, much the same way Nick Foligno has.

Additionally, the Hawks could take on Goodrow’s cap hit without affecting the team’s ability to pursue additional free agents. Picking up Goodrow seems like a logical choice for Chicago, considering the club is still very much in rebuilding mode.

#2. Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres have a glaring need for a center. They could use a solid second-line center to play behind stars Dylan Cozens and Tage Thompson. Adding Barclay Goodrow could give them the flexibility to move Thompson to the wing or move Goodrow down to the third line.

Buffalo could afford to take on Goodrow’s cap hit as the club is among the teams with the most cap space this offseason. So, don’t be surprised if the Sabres scoop up a veteran leader like Goodrow, especially if it won’t cost them any assets in return.

#3. San Jose Sharks

The Sharks emerged as an intriguing landing spot for Barclay Goodrow. The Post suggested that a pre-arranged deal had been in place for the Sharks to claim Goodrow. Goodrow knows the San Jose organization well after spending some part of his career there.

In San Jose, Goodrow could easily become the team’s top-line center. Most importantly, the Sharks would love to benefit from Goodrow’s leadership and work ethic as presumptive No. 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini is set to join the club.

Furthermore, Goodrow makes a lot of sense in San Jose as the club looks to build a winning culture. Like Chicago, San Jose is in a rebuild. So, getting players with Goodrow’s track record provides the foundation for a successful, young core.
