To win in the NHL, you need multiple star players and some teams have much better duos than others. Entering the 2024–25 NHL season, some star players have found new teams, which has changed the landscape of the NHL. But, going into the season, here are the top three NHL duos.
Top 3 NHL duos to watch during the 2024–25 season
#1 Oilers: McDavid & Draisaitl
The Edmonton Oilers made it to the Stanley Cup Final in large part due to the duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
McDavid is the best player in the NHL, while Draisaitl is a top 10 player as well, and together they form the best duo in the NHL. Furthermore, Draisaitl is entering his contract year, so there is motivation to perform even better in what may be his final season with Edmonton and McDavid.
#2 Avalanche: MacKinnon & Rantanen
The Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2022 and a big reason why was because of their duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen.
Although Colorado hasn't been able to replicate that playoff success, MacKinnon and Rantanen are still one of the top duos in the NHL. MacKinnon won the Hart Trophy last season as the league's MVP after he recorded 140 points in 82 games. Rantanen, meanwhile, added 104 points in 80 games.
#3 Lightning: Kucherov & Point
The Tampa Bay Lightning core group that won the Stanley Cup in 2020 and 2021 is mostly gone, but remaining is their duo of Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point.
Kucherov is widely regarded as the best playmaker in the NHL, having tallied 100 assists and 44 goals for 144 points last season and finishing second in MVP voting.
Point, meanwhile, had 90 points in 81 games in a bit of a down season. However, both Kucherov and Point can be 100+ point guys next season and be a reason for the Lightning's success.
