Zegras started the professional journey with the US NTDP under-17 team for the 2017–18 season in the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he showcased his talent with impressive scores. Zegras was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft but he decided to play in the NCAA Division I ice hockey for Boston University. Zegras concluded his collegiate career in 2020, signing an entry-level contract with the Ducks after that.
