The Vancouver Canucks entered Monday night's game against the Carolina Hurricanes riding a four-game winning streak and hoping to make it five. Unfortunately for them, the Hurricanes had other plans.

Sebastian Aho scored shortly into overtime, his third goal of the season, and helped the Hurricanes salvage a game in which they blew a 3-1 lead in the third period. For Carolina, it was its fourth straight win, improving its record to 6-2, while Vancouver dropped to 4-1-3.

The Hurricanes found the scoresheet first, thanks to William Carrier's first goal since joining Carolina, only to have Brock Boeser respond for Vancouver by tying the score with his fifth tally.

Carolina then retook the lead thanks to the fourth goal of the year from Martin Necas, which was followed by a second-period tally from Jack Roslovic, his fourth of the season.

The Canucks mounted a comeback effort in the third period, as team captain and last season's Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Quinn Hughes scored his second of the year to make it a one-goal game. And with just over three minutes remaining in regulation, Pius Suter knotted the score.

However, the Hurricanes seized the win in overtime as Aho took a pass from Shayne Gostisbehere and buried a backhand shot past goaltender Kevin Lankinen 47 seconds into the extra session.

Pytor Kochetkov finished with 24 saves, while Lankinen made 28 in what was his first loss as a Canuck.

3 biggest takeaways from Canucks overtime loss to the visiting Hurricanes

#3. Kevin Lankinen continues to be solid

Signed as an insurance goaltender for the Canucks owing to the struggles of Arturs Silovs and the injury to Thatcher Demko, Lankinen has proved to be a worthy signing.

He made 28 saves despite the loss, which was his first as a member of the team after having won four straight to begin his tenure.

#2. Vancouver's consistency was once again not there

While the Canucks were challenged by coach Rick Tocchet to give a full 60-minute effort, they instead found themselves trailing by two goals in the second period, something that he later lamented in his postgame remarks.

“You’ve just gotta stay focused on your task at hand,” Tocchet said. “You can’t have those lulls. I think sometimes we lose focus at a certain part of the game, and then the next line loses focus.”

#1. Vancouver's power play continues to struggle

The Canucks failed to convert on all three power-play chances against the Hurricanes, continuing a troubling trend.

Since scoring multiple power play goals in its first game of the year, Vancouver has since gone just 3 for 27 with the man advantage since then.

The Canucks next host the New Jersey Devils at Rogers Arena on Wednesday night.
