The Winnipeg Jets cruised to a 3-0 shutout win over the Nashville Predators on Monday night at the Canada Life Center. The win marked the Jets’ 27th of the season and extended their winning streak to four games.
Gabriel Vilardi led the way with two power play goals, with Dylan DeMelo adding the other tally for the Jets. Connor Hellebuyck made 22 saves to earn the clean sheet.
So, here’s a look at the three key reasons why the Winnipeg Jets shut out the Nashville Predators:
Three reasons why the Winnipeg Jets shut out the Nashville Predators
#3 Strong special teams
The Winnipeg Jets’ special teams were a key factor in helping them cruise past the Predators. The Jets went 2-for-5 with the man advantage. Vilardi’s two goals were crucial in helping the Jets take a commanding lead over Nashville.
Moreover, their penalty kill got the job done, going 2-for-2 on the night. The Jets kept high-danger chances to a minimum, allowing Connor Hellebuyck to make saves without much pressure. The solid overall effort on special teams allowed the Jets to comfortably skate away with the two points.
#2 Vilardi’s two goals
Gabriel Vilardi continued his strong season with two goals, giving him 17 on the season. Most importantly, the two tallies came on the power play. Kyle Connor and Nikolaj Ehlers assisted on each goal.
It’s worth pointing out that Vilardi is on his way to eclipsing his career highs. Last season, he notched up 36 points in 47 games. He’s up to 34 points in 38 games. At this rate, Vilardi could post a 30-goal campaign.
#1 Hellebuyck’s 22 saves
The story of the night was Connor Hellebuyck, who notched up his fifth shutout of the season. The Jets netminder looks like a solid pick for this season’s Vezina Trophy, having registered a 2.06 GAA to go with a .928 SV%.
Of course, Hellebuyck’s defense deserves credit. They played well, minimizing high-danger shots while clearing the front of the net of rebounds and traffic. Doing so was crucial in allowing Hellebuyck to see the puck well and make saves.
It’s also worth pointing out that the Predators couldn’t get much going against the Jets. While the Predators played a much more physical game, it wasn’t enough to stop the Jets from using their speed and skill to keep the puck away from the Preds.
Eventually, the Preds were outplayed by a much more talented Winnipeg Jets team. The Jets will get a chance to catch their breath before taking on the Colorado Avalanche on New Year’s Eve at Ball Arena.
